Are you writing for peanuts? (Or worse… WISHING you could get paid even that much?)
WHAT IF YOU COULD UNLEASH A RAVING STAMPEDE OF CLIENTS, WILLING TO PAY YOUR FEES…
EVEN IF THEY HAVE TO WAIT WEEKS JUST TO GET ON YOUR CALENDAR?
Unlock the secrets that will help you learn how to build a thriving writing business from nothing.
Dear Freelancer:
Hey, I’m going to be blunt here. I don’t know what gets me most upset:
-
Knowing there are so many writers out there who take those $2 for 500 word writing gigs
-
Hearing about clients who think that’s fair
-
Or, talking with people with God-given writing talent who’d love to work from home as a freelancer, but who give up before they even get started… because they just don’t know how to make it work.
Why get all riled up?
Because I was there once, too.
My name is Sue LaPointe, and I’m currently the #1 ranked writer on Guru.com. I’m definitely not the cheapest writer around. In fact, my hourly rate now starts at $100, and sometimes runs triple that. I’m definitely not the best writer around, either, to be completely honest. I didn’t major in Journalism or English. I started my business with no clips, no portfolio, no clients, and no idea how to even write a press release (or much else!). What I did start with was a business coach and a whole lot of motivation.
In the next couple of minutes, as you read all the way to the bottom of this web page, you’re going to see how you can build a thriving writing business of your own, too. Chances are, you’re more qualified than I was when I launched my business in June of 2006. And hopefully, you’re smarter than I was!
“$2 for a 500 word article? You’re crazy. You’re wasting your time!”
That’s what I heard one day in 2005 when I was boasting (yeah, really) to some family members about having landed my first paying writing gig. I’d been doing some writing and editing for years, but after deciding to stay home with my kids, I’d gotten serious about finding work… and I thought this was a GOOD gig!
Remember when you were in high school? Maybe you had a teacher who told you that you were talented at writing. Think back to when you were a child, dreaming about what you’d become when you grew up. Maybe you liked writing stories, and your parents and friends said they were good. You briefly entertained the idea of writing for a living… until you figured out most writers starve! Or you calculated the odds of becoming the next J.K. Rowling or Stephen King. So you decided to go in another direction.
I did the same thing. After getting the equivalent of two college degrees (one in Psychology, one in Accounting - can you see some lack of direction here?), and half a graduate degree at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary (quit after doing a psych internship at Danvers State Mental Hospital - too scary)… I had to face reality. I needed a JOB I could count on.
But there were problems:
- I was bored to death looking at numbers.
- I wanted to stay home with my kids.
- I just KNEW there had to be a way to do what I loved (writing) to earn a living.
So I did something drastic.
Combining some savings, a tax refund, and some money I’d squirreled away from doing a book index, I hired a business coach. At the time, I wasn’t even certain it was possible to really get paid to write, so I left it up to my coach - should I go into writing? Or, should I try my hand at (yet another) MLM? There was no doubt in her mind… freelance writing is a fantastic way to earn a living. And she told me that if I’d just do what she said to do, and take good notes all along the journey, within six months I’d have a thriving writing business.
Well guess what? She was absolutely right.
And now, two years later, I have way more projects than I could ever hope to write on my own. New clients have to wait in line to get on my calendar. I’ve even got a team of writers who work with me - and we stay very, very busy.
Do you remember a moment ago I mentioned that my coach told me to take good notes?
Well, I did that, too. And those notes are what I used for a basis for my book Working Writer Happy Writer: How to Build a Thriving Writing Business from NOTHING.

Don’t know about you, but in my search for a “work from home” business, I’d sunk more time and money into wild goose chases than I care to admit. And all for nothing. With kids who need braces, who like after school activities, and who will someday want to go to college, I knew it had to work this time. The coaching was expensive - and my husband (a pastor), bless his heart, was rooting for me all the way - I really, really needed this to work. I know what I’m good at, and what I stink at, so I set some rules:
-
No cold calling. In fact, no calling at all, if possible.
-
No wasting time traveling to clients to pitch them a proposal.
-
No writing on spec.
-
No budget, really. Well, not more than a hundred dollars, tops.
Are you beginning to see how much happier you could be as a writer who does this the easy way? Just imagine having high paying writing gigs lined up month after month. What would it be like to have clients calling you to see if you’d be willing to work with them?
The further on you read you'll begin to see how simple building a thriving writing business really is… if you have the right tools. When you read more about this “writing biz in a box” you will discover why so many people get excited and want to get started right away.
This book serves as a blueprint, a roadmap you can follow to copy the actual action steps I took to build my business.
Here’s just a bit of what you’ll learn:
-
How to find gigs that pay… really pay. And if you do well, these clients will come back month after month asking for more!
-
Learn how to set (and get!) your fees like you’ve been doing this for years.
-
Discover how to connect with these two professionals, and fill your calendar with some of the most interesting, well-paying writing projects you can imagine… and as another plus, you’ll be helping scores of people succeed in their businesses - a great feeling.
-
What you need to know about finding local clients who will hire you.
-
Uncover the secrets of getting paid - every time.
-
Learn how to open the door to generating passive income. Write it once, get paid over and over and over… and no, it’s not by collecting royalties.
-
How to master the 7 most common challenges freelance writers face in taking on new projects.
-
Get these people involved in your business right away, and you can save yourself time, money, and a lot of headaches. Or, you can go it alone and take your chances.
-
6 Easy ways to boost your writing income - a couple of these could push you into the $200-300 per hour revenue range.
Of course, there’s more - a LOT more. But before I can let you buy the book, you’ve got to hear from these writers who did sort of a test drive on it a while back. Just to make sure my success wasn’t a fluke, and to make sure anyone could get the same results I got by doing what I did, I gave six new freelancers the chance to give it a shot - oh, and they had only one MONTH. Here’s what they said after only a few weeks:

Hi, I’m Michelle Preston-Strout, the owner of Web Friendly Writers. Sue LaPointe (and the rich information she dispenses in her book Working Writer, Happy Writer), is almost as responsible for the success of my writing business as I am.
The specific steps that Sue outlines in her book which took her from nowhere to being a highly successful business owner in less than a year, truly inspired and enabled me to get my own writing business off the ground.
The resources that Sue recommends, her advice on navigating the freelance job boards, and her practical stance on viewing writing as a business, rather than just a job, are priceless. What’s more- her advice is something you can use whether you’ve been writing for years, or are just trying to break into the business.
Every time I go back to this book- I walk away with something concrete that I can do today to improve my business. Sue is the real deal. She’s created a thriving writing business from the ground up, and is the ideal mentor for anyone who wants a real career as a writer. The fact that she’s willing to share this information is a remarkable gift to those of us seeking to grow and develop our skills. Thanks, Sue. |

I received your book on September 15 and will count that as my "start date" for my freelance business "Write About Everything." Since that date I have earned $302.03 and I have another $170 pending. I am thrilled with this process, especially when you consider that I am still working at my "out of the house job" at 40 to 45 hours per week. I have not yet taken the step of reducing my work hours at my "out of the house job." That is a little scary, but I am just about ready to reduce my hours by at least 25 % to allow me more time to work on my business.
Since reading the book I have produced several products that I had not done before: product descriptions, a sales letter, a squeeze page, a press release, article re-writes
Sue, I can honestly tell you (and your readers) this: If it wasn't for WWHW, I would not have had the know-how or the confidence to step out of fantasizing about being a writer and actually being a writer. I cannot help but think of the old children's story "The Velveteen Rabbit" who learned through the hard knocks of life that being "real" is really no more than believing that you are "real." Thanks to Sue LaPointe and "Working Writer, Happy Writer" I am a REAL writer with a REAL business.
I feel completely indebted to you for all your generosity and help! Without your encouragement Write About Everything would still be a figment of my imagination!
Thank you, Sue. |

I signed on to test drive Working Writer Happy Writer: How to Build a Thriving Writing Business from Nothing one month ago and in the last week and a half I can say I haven’t regretted the time or energy I’ve put into this endeavor.
I read half the book in one sitting, taking notes and making plans. Meanwhile I still searched all the free job hunting sites and did what I was doing before I read WWHW to see if I could find work the old way. To date in one month doing what I did before reading WWHW; I had applied to a total of 34 jobs and received only four inquiries for work (two were serious; or at least not insulting).
In four days time of reading Working Writer Happy Writer: How to Build a Thriving Writing Business from Nothing I was signed up at a job site and preparing a portfolio of work. In only a week and a half since my profile went live I’ve bid on 19 jobs and received three inquiries (one turned into a job today).
I have a better shot at getting jobs the WWHW way in a shorter amount of time than the traditional way I had been using. More than half of my bids are still open with a possibility of being converted to a job. I am more than confident that in a month’s time I will have a return on my investment enough to have paid for my membership and in six months: to pay for needed software; an extra phone line for business purposes; and maybe even a graphic designer to create a logo I want.
That is just the tip of the iceberg; Working Writer Happy Writer: How to Build a Thriving Writing Business from Nothing has numerous tips and recommendations. Great things do come in small packages. I can’t thank Sue LaPointe enough. Her book came at the right time; saving me time and frustration. It truly has given me the opportunity to do the writing I want to do the way I want to do it.
Thank you Sue! |

Sue, I think the book is fabulous. In fact I read it twice from cover to cover and then kept referencing back to parts. It reminds you of really how simple marketing can be if you let it. I think most people including myself think that the internet is the only way to effectively advertise your business and forget about the local businesses around them. I am working on portfolios for different areas of writing now. The first one worked out great. I did a brochure like you suggested with my Brother in Law’s business.
I seem to have gotten some higher paying jobs lately. I am giving credit to the e-book and the new portfolios for it. I would recommend your e-book to anyone looking for ways to market their writing.
Thanks!! |

Sue LaPointe’s e-book How to Build a Thriving Writing Business from Nothing is a great read for anyone looking to start a career in freelance writing. It truly gets down to the nuts and bolts of how to start your business and what to do when it takes off.
I followed Sue’s advice and my freelance career took off. I wasn’t prepared for how quickly I would become inundated with work. I simply followed her step-by-step advice in setting goals and bidding for work. Within one week of following her advice, I needed to revise my goals and set them even higher. I even got to the point within two weeks that I began to have the option to choose what work I wanted and turn down work I didn’t have time to do. I used her book as a reference guide to help me to write the many different assignments I took on. I highly recommend this e-book, but caution you to be prepared for the onslaught of work that will be yours just by following her sage advice! |

And yes, I know that’s only five - so, what happened to the sixth guinea pig? Well, life got in the way (as it sometimes does), and she didn’t get to it. Hey, it happens. But it also underscores something important:
FACT: No business builds itself. You have to do the work - but if you do what the book tells you to do, and you don’t let anything keep you from following through… you will get the results you really want.
You're intelligent enough to know that there’s no magic pill you can take to get what you want in life. If there were, we’d all be so good-looking, rich, and healthy we could barely stand ourselves. Getting what you want in life demands action.
Will you have to work to build your writing business? Absolutely.
Can you build it in a day? No way. In fact, it took me six months to make enough to support a family (not here in Florida, but somewhere that’s not so expensive, for sure). But one writer who bought the book in January was up to about $3,000 per month in her second month!
Here’s the thing - six months are going to pass by whether you get started now or not. At the end of that time, you could have a flourishing business that allows you to:
-
Spend more time doing the things you really enjoy - with the people you love. Compare that to commuting to a job you hate, worrying about whether you’re next in line when layoffs come.
-
Write from anywhere in the world - as long as you’ve got internet service, you’re in business. Forget all about groveling before your boss, begging for a day off.
-
Set your own hours. Watch your kids’ faces light up (or grimace!) when you tell them you’ll be chaperoning their next field trip because now you’re the boss.
-
Charge top dollar for your services. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that you can earn more and work less by raising your rates - and if you do it right, your clients will thank you.
-
Give your budget some wiggle room. This is a nearly no overhead business - and one that shows no signs of slowing down. Because you’re not limited to your local economy, you’re not bound by what’s going on near you. Recession? Ha! Not in this business.
Picture yourself a few years from now. If you continue doing what you’re doing now, will you make it to where you want to be? Or is it time to do something different? Time to take action? Time to go after your dreams and make it work?
So, since you’ve made it all the way down the page to this point, of course, I’m going to ask you to take one action in particular - buy the book. But I can practically hear you asking, “What’s it cost?” And hey, I don’t blame you. It was always the first question out of my mouth before I built my business.
The book is $147.
“Yeah, that better be SOME book,” you’re saying. And that’s fair, I suppose. But when you look at the price in context, it’s actually a pretty amazing deal.
How so?
-
Well, first of all, at my current coaching rate, if you were to hire me one-on-one, you’d get about an hour of my time. With this book by your side, it’s like owning my brain during the first few months of your business. You can ask my kids whether that’s a plus or not, but I know it was a huge help to me to have my coach telling me what to do next, how to get started, how to solve different problems that arose.
-
If you compare $147 to what I paid ($5,000!) to learn this same material, it doesn’t take a math genius to recognize a deal when you see one!
-
The bonuses. Yup. I’m about to pile on bonuses like no kidding. They bring the total value of this whole package up to several hundred dollars. Some of them may not be available indefinitely, so you’re going to want to jump on them quickly. Use each of these to help you squeeze maximum profits from your writing business, right away.
Here they are…
